2011 Naomi C. Chase Lecture – Jerry Pinkney…

May 5, 2011

Yesterday, while I flipped through miles of emails and Twitter feeds, I found a notice from CBIG (the Children’s Book Illustrators Guild of Minnesota) announcing the appearance of one of the greats in children’s illustration. The 2010 Caldecott Medal winner, Jerry Pinkney was in town to give a lecture at the University of Minnesota. If you are familiar with Jerry’s work, you know what I mean when I confess; the first time I saw one of his books, I was a little intimidated.

Jerry is a master of watercolor. His images dislpay passion, charm and a depth you would expect to find only in a museum. The lecture focused on Jerry’s life, growing up with a large family in a small home. Admitting how cramped it was for him growing up, he confessed “the only private space he ever had was in his drawing tablet.”

Jerry is a down-to-earth individual with great artistic vision. He has illustrated over 100 books and of all of them, I personally believe his most recent work is his best. The Lion and the Mouse is a wordless picturebook rendition of Aesop’s fable and I strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys great storytelling and beautful watercolor.

Thanks for stopping by the Twin Cities, Jerry. It was an honor to meet you.
